Martin Gerard strolled to his expansive, multi-level balcony and stared across his realm. With its sparkling skyscrapers and sprawling parks, Lorne shone like a jewel. Business, industrial, and residential districts had been well balanced by his family planners, many long centuries before.

A cool breeze ruffled his silk robe. He allowed it to hang open so that his mistress, if she awoke, might see his muscular chest and battle scar. He only had one, but it was more than enough proof of his bravery. She couldn’t get enough of his physique, or his salt and pepper hair, or his dominance of this world.

He turned his attention to the sky, watching three of his best fighters wheel and dive after a fourth ship, Fortune’s gift. She despised him, probably for the disrespect he’d shown her father at the end of the Zezner War. Or maybe she thought he was responsible for the attack on her mother and father, and many of their key soldiers.

Mariah DeLene tiptoed behind him. She wasn’t as quiet as she believed, but he accepted the farce and soon felt her hands snake around his body from behind, touch his chest, then his abdominal muscles. Her bare breasts pushed against his back, and he wished he wasn’t wearing the silk robe, sheer as it was.

“You left me in bed,” she pouted.

“As I often do.”

Her hands explored, then, as though she could read his nanite-boosted mind, pulled down his robe so she could put skin to skin. His arousal came quickly, despite his age, despite the distractions of the cloud-slicing dogfight miles above the planet.

Or maybe because of it. Images of Fortune Marlboro filled his imagination as Mariah touched him everywhere. His other mistresses were no doubt watching from the apartments he provided them, either plotting the fall of his current favorite, or secretly thanking the woman for providing them a vacation from his attention.

He didn’t enjoy that thought, even though he knew it was true. None of them adored him with constant and absolute devotion. His wife had been that woman, though he hadn’t appreciated her passion and loyalty at the time.

Now he was a bachelor and the most powerful man in the world… the most powerful man in the galaxy.

Because Duke Uron Marlboro crushed the Zezner invaders.

Mariah whispered hotly in his ear, “Come back to bed, my king.”

He lingered a moment, gazing toward the Cherry Blossom District where the Marlboro House Guard rode fine horses. The sight amused him, and his confidence increased. Marlboro wasn’t so perfect after all. The man had fallen to competing with minor houses in a gentleman’s hobby rather than war. Gone was the constant mech training, strategy sessions, and reviews of every battle in the Zezner War.

Duke Ron Marlboro was spending his time touring Elondale and trying to outride Duke Travis Bull and his men.

Gerard turned quickly, catching Mariah by surprise. Flinging her over his shoulder, he slapped her once on the ass, hard.

“Oh!” she squealed.

He strode into the bed chambers, not bothering to pull the curtains, and threw her on the mattress.
